STEM Subjects

STEM subjects are the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, enginieering, and mathematics. Since the STEM jobs such as computer specialists and bio-engineers require higher education and professional knowledge about their fields, the average salary of STEM jobs are higher than the average salary of the U.S.  The <Figure 1> by Newgeography (2011)  illustrates that STEM-related jobs earn much higher in most states than other jobs.

MOOCs

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) are fee non-degree online courses with open unlimited global enrollment to anyone who desries to learn and regardless of their current educational level. Those kind of online courses seems that they can ever replace college, but the reality does not. The Wall Street Journal introduces some ideas of experts in terms of the MOOC and the experts suggest that “in the technology’s early days, it remains to be seen whether this promise can be realized.” (The Wall Street Journal, 2013). Although there are unlimited possibilities that MOOCs can change higher education, they ultimately miss the one important thing-“interaction between professors and students” (Newsome, 2013). Moreover, in terms of MOOCs, “Intellectual property and financial details are issues” (Peterson, 2013). Therefore, I believe the MOOCs cannot replace college, and there should be more research to make it available.

The issue of the U.S. bombing Syria

The U.S. president Obama decided to attack Syria where its president Assad ordered his army to use chemical weapons against the citizens and finally made over 1,400 people in death. Although it would be illegal to operate military intervention without any approval from the UN, Obama was intensely determined to send his cruise missiles into Syria (Smith, 2013). There could be pros and cons on this issue. The foreign military intervention might harm an autonomy of a country and the fact that an advanced and big country is trying to attack another nation can make the public uncomfortable. On the other hand, this military intervention is aimed to protect civilians who live in Syria, being forced to feel fear against their government.  Also, the act of Syria that used chemical weapons ran counter to the international Chemical Weapons convention, effective Oct. 14. (Gordon, 2013). I believe that it is not desirable to intervene to another country causing to harm its independence and a right. However, if the act of a country violates humanity and moral standards, it is essential for other countries and organizations to go against it.

Obama Concerns of Shutdown

As Obama keeps ping-pong game with Republicans about  the budget, Democrats propels Obama caring. Obama caring forces the public to join a health insurance, which requires the young period to get into it to get a successful outcome. Since it is pushed without any agree from Republicans,  and according to New York Times, it leads the fact “that 800,000 federal workers were to be furloughed and more than a million others would be asked to work without pay”  (2013). The shutdown is after a 17-year hiatus of  former president John F. Kennedy. The concern of Obama is that the economy of the United States becomes worse in that “more families will be hurt. More businesses will be harmed” (The Economic Times, 2013).

Open Source

An open source is a software which allows the public to modify its source code and re-disperse it through the internet. However, knowing a source code means an ability to develop a similar one and further, it provides an access to a technology which originates from the source code. For this reason, most businesses try to conceal their sources and if they open it to the public, they are likely to require a license fee.
On the other hand, the idea of open source is that the act of modifying and redeveloping a source code freely leads to an enhancement of a software.

Net Neutrality

Net neutrality can be defined ‘free and open internet’. It requiers all the contents of internet to be treated equally by internet providers without any discrimination. In this internet-oriented era, the information gap problem is now increasing, which makes the concept of ‘net neutrality’ become more important.

On the other hand, there are acts agianst net neutrality such as SOPA and PIPA. These regulations maintain the protection of one’s copy rights and intellectual property rights.

It is true that copy rights and intellectual property rights should be protected since the information contains all the efforts and exertions of providers. But, the public must be avoided by the exclusion of specific information and inequality of access to the information.
